About our facility

The University of Florida High-Performance Computing Center was established to support UF researchers whose computational needs exceed those that can be provided at the departmental and college levels. Examples include diverse disciplines such as computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, molecular dynamics, planetary dynamics, bioinformatics, and high-energy physics simulation and data analysis. These and other research disciplines within UF require teraflops of computational capacity and petabytes of storage capacity.

To accomplish this mission, the HPC Center maintains facilities that include a centralized Linux cluster, two large-scale shared file systems, and a campus-wide, dedicated research network. Additionally, the HPC Center staff provides application support to researchers and their graduate students.

Funding for the HPC Center comes directly from the researchers who invest in its facilities. These investents provide access to the Center's facilities at a level that is proportional to the amount of the investment and are often matched by their respective departments and colleges. The University will sometimes also provide matching funds. In this way, we are able to provide resources well-beyond what an individual researcher would be able to purchase on their own. Oversight of the HPC Center and its operations is provided by the HPC Committee.

Research Spotlight
Dr. Paul Avery, Physics
Dr. Avery was the original HPC Center investor. His initial $200,000 investment combined with com- mitments from CLAS and OIT for staffing, additional equipment, and machine room improvements marked the creation of the HPC Center in 2004. Dr. Avery's vision was that of a shared-resource facility that could support his Open Science Grid research as well as the HPC community within the University. <more>
